One morning the farmer told Cockerel that he was more reliable than his old alarm clock. That Cockerel was smarter at waking him up than anything else. Cockerel felt so great! From that day on, he started boasting that he was greater than anyone else and annoyed even his best friends on the farm. He taunted everyone, saying that he was more important to the farmer than all of the other animals.

Every single time he boasted Cocky Cockerel's ego puffed his feathers out, making him look like an inflated balloon. Through his boasting Cockerel rolled into the river. Vulnerable and afraid, it was there that the wind, thunder, and river inspired him to see that he was not better than everyone else at all. He soon discovered that his greatest feeling of all was in appreciating the greatness in everyone else.
